3 Common Roadblocks to Finding Your Dream Job

March 9, 2021

Are you still in search of your dream job? You’re not alone. Countless people like yourself find themselves in positions they are unhappy with or stuck in a career trajectory they no longer desire. Or, perhaps you know exactly what your dream role would be but you don’t know how to get there. If you are one of millions who find themselves in this position, here are three key items to examine that could be blocking your road to the job of your dreams.

1. Your Resume

Believe it or not, your resume is the first place to look if you continually find yourself unable to land your dream job. Spelling and grammatical errors alone can throw you off course. You’ll want to leave a positive first impression, and the best way to do that is by ensuring your resume contains no typos or avoidable errors.

One helpful tip is to tweak your resume for each job you apply to. Managers and recruiters at staffing agencies sort through countless resumes each day, so you’ll want to stand out from the crowd by having a resume that fits the position, rather than what reads like a generic resume.

Cover letters are the best way to enhance your resume to bring your story to life. Unnecessary design flourishes on a resume should be avoided at all cost. Keep it clear and simple and free from mistakes. Staffing agencies are a great resource for resume help.

2. Lack of Experience

You may know exactly what your dream role is and are ready to apply. Or, you may have already tried applying multiple times to similar roles and never landed one. If this is the case, you may be held back due to lack of experience. Even if you feel you would succeed in the role, potential employers don’t know that. If your level of experience is keeping you from the job you love, focus on getting the experience necessary to land it. This doesn’t mean you have to go back to school, necessarily.

You might apply for jobs in the same field or jobs that are tangentially related to your desired role. Say, for instance, you are an accounting and finance professional who dreams of working for one of the big 4 accounting firms in a high-level role. If you are not yet qualified for one of the big 4 accounting firms, there are private practices and individuals in need of your accounting and finance services.

Gaining experience in other roles will only add to your qualifications and eventually you will be more suited to your dream accounting and finance role at one of the big 4 accounting firms. In time, if you really work at it, your experience will build to the point where you are qualified.

3. Fear

Lack of motivation or patience, some other common reasons people cite for not being able to find their dream job, are all tied up in fear. As humans we make excuses for ourselves when we are afraid and these excuses can manifest in the form of giving up. Fear of failure, fear of being too old to change course, and fear of the unknown are some of the deeper reasons behind our lack of motivation. Just know that a little bit of fear is healthy and shows you are pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone. Only then will change start to happen.
